What does anxiety & stress cause?

Anxiety and stress cause you to stay in a state what is know as "Fight Flight Response" where hormones are released via the Peripheral Nervous System to help you to either fight or flee a perceived threat. Stress causes biological and psychological responses to the perceived threat and you, without even having to do a thing, respond accordingly to protect yourself. In this state, your eyes may dilate, your heart beats stronger, you may sweat, get a dry mouth, and your digestive system stops functioning  as the stomach contacts and you feel nauseous and may vomit, whilst other muscles relax such as the bladder and anus. The kidney release adrenaline to prepare you for action and theses functions occur automatically to in response to acute stress  when you have to react quickly to an immediate threat, and then after the threat is gone your system goes back to normal function. Chronic stress occurs to a stressor and can continue over a sustained period and your body still responds to it in a similar way. Automatic processes still fire off to protect you, but you neither "Fight or Flee" so hormones released in the body have no where to go.

A stressor is the stimulus (or threat) that causes stress could be the constant barrage of demands coming through your letter box whilst under financial pressure, loss of your job,  exam, divorce, death of loved one, moving house, loss of job..Allergies, Anger, Anxiety, Blushing, Divorce Stress, Executive Stress, Frustration, Irritability, Nightmares, Pre-menstrual Tension (PMT), Public Speaking, Sexual problems, Skin problems, Social anxieties, Speech impediments, Stress Management, Tooth grinding, Relationship issues either personal or professional, and ease most things that might be overwhelming any part of your life right now.

What is the Stress Response?

Stress is caused by how we operate in certain areas of our lives, how we differentiate between challenges and opportunities and how we react to them. It’s fair to say that what one person perceives as a stressful situation, another would not so there are different levels of stress and many different ways to liberating ways to regain control of your emotions. A situation becomes so mainly because they are incongruent with your attitudes, values, and beliefs. An interesting quote reads, “Don’t get confused between my personality and my attitude, my personality is who I am, my attitude depends on who you are” I interpret this to mean we all have to wear different hats for different jobs, you have to be flexible or you might have conflict between your attitude, value and beliefs and a stressful situation the arises.

As much as we try not to let stress and anxiety affects our relationships with others, it often does. We may be rude to co-workers or short with our spouses, even snap at our children. This type of behaviour makes us feel worse, raising our stress levels and compounding the problem and possibly finding unhealthy alternate ways of trying to relieve the emotion such as drinking, smoking, eating and reliance on prescribed or un-prescribed drugs.

When we get stressed our bodies are being subconsciously triggered to respond and the body releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol so our systems are put on what we’d call ‘high alert’ ready for ‘fight flight or freeze’, which was great for our ancestor who had to hunt or be hunted, but now this mechanism is used to protect us from different situations, such as stressful or uncomfortable situations, this response is designed to protect us but can cause some unpleasant side effects.

These hormones generate many changes around the body such as increased heart rate; it can affect blood pressure and your breathing rate. The leg muscles can feel like jelly as they get primed for a fast getaway and our brains ‘feel stressed’ as they get prepared for rapid action and acute awareness. The bad news is that the body continues to respond like this for as long as you keep experiencing the stressors. After long periods exposed to stress, and the effects of our own stress hormones, the body may become exhausted wherein a state of continuing anxiety can be reached, you may recognise some of the effects below?


Some of the typical physical symptoms of Generalised Anxiety Disorder are:


  •     pounding heartbeat
  •     high pulse rate
  •     high breathing rate
  •     shortness of breath
  •     trembling
  •     sweating
  •     cold clammy hands
  •     upset stomach
  •     worrying about future disasters, bad health etc,
  •     Focus remains on negative thoughts
  •     frequent sighing
  •     generally apprehensive
  •     impatient and irritable
  •     angry outbursts
  •     insomnia
  •     diarrhoea
  •     frequent urination
  •     dry mouth
  •     lump in the throat
  •     flushing
  •     muscle tension and aches, especially in the neck and shoulders
  •     inability to relax
  •     easily startled
  •     fidgety
  •     eyelid and other twitches
  •     tiring easily

  •     avoidance

  •     escape

  •     isolation

Emotional Freedom and Meridian therapy

Emotion Freedom Therapy is a relatively new concept, its origins are based on acupuncture but without the needles, instead we tap the meridian points. When your body has any type of heightened emotions, the body goes into a stress response known as the “Fight or flight response”. For instance, if you say negatives things about yourself in the mirror such as “I’m fat” the feelings can send you into fight or flight and increases cortisol levels, which keeps you fat. Any emotion that is either internally represented or outwardly expressed has a similar effect on your body. When we do tapping, science now shows that we send a calming signal to the amygdale in the brain, which can bring a massive shift in the body. The most pressing issues from pain to weight control, stress or unwanted emotions can be treated quickly and effectively. Tapping can release baggage from past relationships and help with improve new relationships. It can quickly and effectively help you to find solutions to reduce stress in many other areas of your life.

Emotional Resolution

Emotional Resolution is all about looking after your emotional health and this is just as important as caring for your physical health, because people who are emotionally healthy are in control of their emotions and behaviour. Eye Movement and Desensitisation Reprocessing

He national Institute of clinical excellence (NICE) have announced that EMDR is an effective therapy for the treatment of people who been traumatised, it is thought that that EMDR closes down the part of the brain that normally articulates the emotion that fuel the person fears. The basis behind EMDR therapy is bilateral stimulation using auditory or visual stimuli that tracks from left to right and back again. This is thought to emulate the psychological state that we enter into when in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Studies show that when in REM sleep we are able to make new associations between things very rapidly and may be tapping into this high speed processing mode that we all have but often can’t access.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT is a form Psychotherapy, a talking therapy that combines cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy. It focuses on how you think about the things going on in your life, your thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes (your cognitive processes) and how these impacts on the way you behave and deal with emotional problems. It then looks at how you can change any negative patterns of thinking or behaviour that may be causing you difficulties.

CBT tends to be short, taking six weeks to six months. You will usually attend a session once a week, each session lasting either 50 minutes or an hour. Together with the therapist you will explore what your problems are and develop a plan for tackling them. You will learn a set of principles that you can apply whenever you need to. You may find them useful long after you have left therapy.

CBT may focus on what is going on in the present rather than the past. However, the therapy may also look at your past and how your past experiences impact on how you interpret the world now.

Everyone is unique but typically clients begin to see improvements after one session but should consider 4 to 6 sessions as a recommended plan for learning a deep rooted and long lasting defence against anxiety.
